IMO books are better for retention of information. You can go back and re read a statement easily.

Audio books are easier for reviewing a book you already read while you do something else.

personal preference. a particularly useful or good book should be read twice at least. Why not audio book the first time, read the second?

I find reading along with the audio book playing gives me better retention.

I think it depends on how important the information is. If you're just reading for entertainment or casual self help type things audio books are fine (it's great for walking/biking/jogging/cleaning). If it's a recommended book, school related, career advancement related it should be read and notes taken on critical info. Reading while listening to the audio book can up reading speeds, retention and recall as well. If your using audio books exclusively your reading ability can also fall behind so don't use them as a crutch. Audio book is also of course better then nothing.
