My experience is that there are some phrases that women use to deemphasize, desexualize or diminish your frame while being covert. Some of these words came to mind are cute, adorable and sweet. Other times these word can indicate interest without seeming overly interested. To help understand if being called cute indicates interest or is a covert shit test look for reframing. If you are talking about an idea, music, hobbies in a masculine powerful way and the feedback is cute or adorable, then it is a covert shit test. Example 1: You “My brothers and I went cliff diving over break. Jump from 50 feet up is a rush.” Her “It’s cute that you vacation with your brothers” Example 2: You “My brothers and I went cliff diving over break. Jump from 50 feet up is a rush.” Her “Board shorts are cute” In Example 1 the attempt is to reduce the masculinity without saying anything negative (covert), aka shit test. In Example 2 the attempt is to convey interest without being overtly interested, thinking about you in board shorts. I wanted to see how aware women were on using words like cute and adorable to re-frame. So when asked if I like the Wonder Woman movie, I would say that the movie was cute and fun. Women would take issue for framing the movie as “cute”. I then said that they were adorable for liking super hero movies, that got similar responses. Women understand how to use words like cute and adorable to grab frame.
