Good question. We know that American makers like Ford and GM are ditching most cars and focusing on Trucks/SUV's. My gut feeling is telling me that American drivers (both male and female) are not switching to bigger vehicles primarily for the reason of safety or cargo space.. I honestly think that it's for the status of being seen in a bigger vehicle.

Mindset.

Bigs cars have perceived advantages, perceived safety, perceived road presence and dominance over smaller cars, perceived ability to "go anywhere". Also, real advantages you can see farther and better, than you could in a smaller car. Status symbol.

Now with ABS, traction control, reversing cameras, they have become very easy to drive.
