I'm 31 and I've been in my field (STEM) for about 7yrs.

I work as a SDET/QA Engineer. I started on a salary of £21k ($27k). I've since moved jobs 3 times, on my fourth now and I'm on £50k ($64k).

The best way to jump in salary increase is to move jobs and get a new one. Plain and simple.

Everytime I've moved job it's been a ~10k raise. And you'll never get that with an internal promotion or payrise.

I've done all this without a degree or formal training. It's all been self taught and fake it til you make.

And the end of the day, you gotta take a risk. It may work, it may not. But you'll never know until you make the jump. And if you are it IT and you work as hard as you say you do, you shouldn't struggle to get a new job.

You mentioned about not playing the office politics, in my opinion this is a bad move. I detest office politics with a passion, but I do love to play the game. And it does work if you're good at it.

Can always leverage the new job offer into a wage increase negotiation... Current employer doesn't need to know the compensation details...and you'll know you should leave if your request is denied.

Here are some truths about working in IT

1). Technology moves, you have to constantly be on that hamster wheel of studying. Because younger guys only learn the newer tech.

2). Sadly, the more you are seen the less you are doing your job right. The more you are doing your job right, the less you are seen and the company doesn’t understand why they pay you to do nothing.

3). Read the sidebar. Its not just useful for cracking open the legs of an HB9. It will help you in all that you do.

4). Always be looking for opportunities to improve or position yourself for the future. I once had two job offers. There was a $20k salary difference. I took the lower salary because it offered a means to continue with point 1. I now make three times that salary 10 years later. If I had taken the top dollar, i would be dead in the water now.

Worked at one company for 4 years - salary rose from 50k to 70k. Switched jobs and now make 125k.

Moral - more money means new job

It depends why you go there everyday. Are you going there to be paid in appreciation and recognition or are you going there to get a pay check so you can spend it all and have to work indefinitely or perhaps to get money to invest to quit working.

If you are spending everything as you go and you have no plans or ambitions outside of what the companies objectives are then it makes sense why this would upset you so much. The company owns you and you feel underappreciated. If this is your dream job and you are in a financial position to take a pay cut then go for it, switch companies. My fear is that you don't have a passion outside of your job. There should be something driving you. Work politics shouldn't matter if you have your own projects. I recommend a little soul searching.

Tell the new offer to match ur current offer plus 30 percent. Keep applying for new jobs. Read a lot of teamblind
