Some important terms to become familiar with ... and it's not advertising - it's digital marketing (search the term):

Click Funnel; Customer Journey; Click through rates; Response rate; Landing pages; Lead magnets; Top of Funnel (tof), Middle of Funnel (mof), Bottom of funnel (bof); Email Marketing (# of opens, # of clicks throughs, Bounce (hard or soft)); Influencer marketing; content marketing; etc.

You might also want to look at Martech (the technology used for marketing) and start to understand the major players. Go look through a website called BuiltWith.com and get familiar with all the various technologies companies utilize for marketing and marketing automation.

Worked for a big ad firm in NYC. Things are different now. It's not about making the epic print campaign. People digest media very quickly. Think, "Digital" and "Clicks" for buzz words. As far as characteristics, just like most of life, be smart, engaging, and outgoing without coming off as a goof.
