The counter argument to that is lust.

You can experience lust within meeting someone but not love.

I would also touch on how men and women experience love differently. Love for men occurs over a longer timeline and is more of a "she's growing on me" sort of feeling as opposed to the way women love which is dependant on a man's high-value.

Love doesn't exist. The concept of romantic 'love' that we know really isn't that old. And this hallmark, valentines, Disney concept of love - it doesn't even really exist in all cultures - excepting perhaps obvious western influences.

Take Indian culture with the arranged marriages. Their concept of love is obviously a lot different.

It is abundantly clear that 'love' does not exist. So if 'love' beyond some synonymous meaning with lust doesn't exist, well... how can love at first sight? That being said, you are fighting an uphill battle, and may very likely LOSE the debate. Why? People are so plugged in, they don't WANT to hear this - they don't want to believe.

But it's a fantasy.

If love does exist - it's something hard-won, something lasting, something that CANNOT be found at first site, but is instead forged over a long period of time. The only exception might be a mother to child, but even that is not that concept of love that is being put forth. You'd have to define 'love' to have any hope.

Try by first questioning the definition of "love." The idea is to deconstruct/explore the abstractions with which you are dealing. What is love? What is the relationship between time and love? For instance, you might hinge your argument on the idea that "love" can only be achieved over time and experiences of shared intimacy.

A way to bolster your argument, on another hand, is to construct a counter-argument. For instance, how could you define love in such a way that it makes sense to agree with the idea of "love at first sight"?

Check out "Phaedrus" by Plato if you haven't--or, at least, read a synopsis of it on Wikipedia or something. Plato sets up a dialogue that manages to explore the indeterminate fluidity of rhetoric and language in terms of abstractions such as love and faith. Moreover, he is able to argue for and against his points based upon how he chooses to define such concepts. You should be able to do the same.

I’ll boil down a lot of the answers: Love is deep and requires knowledge about the individual. You can’t get that at first sight, personality, vibe, interests etc...are all learned and involve communication. Define love as anything more than physical and it can’t happen at first sight. Although to be fair you can find out a lot of what I just mentioned within a few minutes. I’ve always taken “at first sight” to mean a quick interaction and there’s chemistry, not literally just based on sight

Define/redefine what love means, use emotional examples "my grandparents are in love, theyve been together for 65 years and they still hold hands". It doesnt have to be an actual example but maybe something from a movie like Up.

Fame the other persons definition as lust, they probably wont mention it because it weakens their argument

Describe the differences of love and lust, a more PG version because of the audience. "Lust is seeing a beautiful woman in a tight dress at the bar, where love is seeing the beauty in a woman who is comfortable around you (sweats, no makeup, snorting while laughing)"

Follow it up with restating why it doesnt exist in different words. Youre gonna want to write an essay verbally.

Other tips: Practice how to control an audience on your friends, even if its for the future. Dont start talking like youre reading here. In order to fit in you need to be aware of common language and conveying meaning.

For example "No", "No, thank you", "Fuck you", "Go die", "I dont think I can make it" and "Id love to but I cant" can all mean the same thing, which one you use in context is dependent on your audience. I tell my friends "Fuck you" but I dont tell my boss that

Several approaches -first line: Attack the unstated base premise - Make them have to prove LOVE exists. If LOVE does not exist then love at first sight can't. -second: redefine the term so that if it can exist then it can't happen quickly - Love is Kind and Gentle(takes time to be expressed) , Love is patient and Love Endures all things (not fast)
-third: differentate infatuation from Love, Infatuation can happen very quickly - use the psychological term Limerance document defne and defend THIS as opposed to love and differentiate it from TRUE love - These are just a few normal debate techniques that should be relatively easy to implement. I hope to hear that you guys won easily!

Love is an organic psychosis experienced so you can have a baby. Just an evolutionary thing, you stay in love until the child is reared to fend for itself.
