Engineer here (automotive).

Don't go to uni. Start your own businesses. My collegues make as much as anyone else does in a 9-5 office job. My bosses boss makes 250k/year, and even then it's management, not engineering, and it took him 10 years to get there, with little hope of moving beyond that.

All the work is slowly being offshored to India and China, or they bring them in from overseas (457 visa) and they work for peanuts.

Start a business and get other people to work for you. One of my mates knows a chick that "designs" her own bikinis (different colour/pattern), gets them made in bangladesh. And sells them here as a side business. Makes 10k a month, more than a professional engineer.
