I would like to apologize in advance for the long post. But if you could bear with me, that would be awesome. If not, I totally understand. I'll include a TL:DR at the bottom.
I've always had loads of struggle in figuring out which profession I " belong" to. That is mainly due to the fact that I have numerous interests and affinities; am a self-taught person; and as a result, quickly get bored of something once I've gotten the general knowledge of it.
Like they say, Jack of all trades, master of none. My blessing and my curse.
I have an awesome, Brazilian TRP-type woman and an amazing 2 yo son (also Brazilian) — both which I love deeply — and I need to be the best man I can be for their sake.
With that being said, I've finally decided that enough is enough, and that I urgently need some TRP wisdom from the Gentlemen of this sub. I'm going to be 27 next month and I need to be the man, the father, the hunter-gatherer. REDPILL ME!
Here's my story:
I've been around the block. Over the past 6 years I have been a:
| JOB | EXPERIENCE WITH JOB |
| Computer Hardware salesman | Made me realize how much I loved computers. Was/Am good at it. |
| An ESL (English as a Second Language) Teacher at a private ESL school. | I enjoyed being able to bridge the gap between "not-knowing" and "fluency", for my students. Was fairly good at it. Was sought out for private tutoring by many students even after I left the school. |
| A Cook, Barback, Counter-clerk and Maintenance Assistant of a Bowling Alley. | Job that I had most prestige — due to my work ethic — and definitely had the most fun at while making fairly decent money (but not enough to comfortably support a family though). |
Here's where it gets a little bit more complicated:
I switched my College Major 4 times — for several reasons — and ultimately ended up with none.
| FIELD OF STUDY | EXPERIENCE WITH FIELD |
| Civil Engineering - 2 Semesters | Terrible mistake. Just because you built enormous structures out of Legos when you were a kid does not mean that deep down — in some Jungian psychological way — you were meant to be an engineer. Dropped out. |
| Law - 1 Semester | Enrolled immediately after dropping out of CE, for the sole, desperate purpose of earning a college education. Dropped out. |
| Physical Education - 1 semester | I was a very scrawny kid and managed to get myself looking half-decent. I also helped many of my overweight or skinny friends get into shape. But I realized that just because I had some knowledge of fitness, doesn't mean that I had to make a career out of it, especially with the lack of job security. Dropped out due to insufficient funds. |
| Civil Engineering (Again. Yes. Fool me twice, shame on me.) - 3 Semesters | I was so desperate to become "someone" that I tricked myself into thinking that I should just finish the degree in which I already had a head-start in, not even considering the main reason why I dropped out. I let money and the "nobility" of the profession blind me. Needless to say, I dropped out. |
Now I have no degree. I moved to GA this past month. Am living with my Father while I wait for my Fiancee and son's VISAs to be issued.
My Father sent me a link on Facebook of a reputable Police Department (with good pay, and countless benefits for me and my family) that was hiring and holding a job fair the following day. So, the next day, after I finished my run of handing out resumes to businesses and restaurants, I decided to go to the job fair without thinking anything of it. Just to see what it was all about.
Well, I was interviewed, liked and basically was told that if I pass the physical and polygraph tests, I'm in. Well, that escalated quickly.
I've always really, really liked detective work and crime shows and books. And I figured that I could also use my computer skills in the cyber-security department. I got this thrill for finally "figuring it all out".
But now, as I'm so near to being a part of this career, I start second-guessing myself.
I'm suddenly researching statistics of Officer deaths in the line of duty. I'm now worrying about bringing loads of emotional stress on my family. I'm all-of-a-sudden paranoid that I'm "signing" my death sentence and about to leave my beautiful Fiancee, a widow, and my son, fatherless. Even though more Trash Recyclers die per year than Police.
I was brave, for a moment, but now... I feel cowardly.
So, please. Redpill me. What am I doing wrong?
Do I adhere to the "A man's gotta' do what a man's gotta' do." motto, and just dive-in?
Or should I think this through, try yet another degree (was considering IT), and get a safe office job even though I have support from my lady for either path I choose?
All advice is welcome.
Thank you for your time.
TL:DR: Have struggled with finding a career all my life due to being Jack of all trades, master of none. Have had proficient work experience in 3 different areas and switched majors 4 times and ultimately obtained no degree. Now have the opportunity to work in a Police Department with good pay and great benefits for me and my family and am suddenly second-guessing myself. What am I doing wrong?
