It's the difference between teasing, and putting someone down.

A good tease makes the person think about what you said, it can be confusing:

Person A: Hey, do you know where the washroom is?
Person B: No clue.
Person A: No worries, I'll let you know when I find it.

Putting someone down does exactly that, it makes the person feel inferior, it's an attack:

Person A: Shit, I forgot to run it through spellcheck.
Person B: Ha, you fucking idiot. You can't do anything right.

Also, with girls, the hotter they are, the worse you have to treat them because their egos will be through the roof. Ugly ones will be insecure already, and you have to tone it down a bit with them.
