Another rule of life... don't be a dick. It's common good manners to say "thank you" and "please". When someone comments you on a fine hair cut or a nice shirt, you say "Thank you". It's not small talk, its good manners.

When I get complimented I usually say thanks and move on. Don't feel like you have to compliment them back either. If you have something witty to say after a compliment then go for it but otherwise just take it and move on. Give them at least one compliment relatively early in the date/when you meet them. That way they know you think they look good. Don't say totally love your smile.. That's cheesy as fuck. Keep it casual. Say something like "nice dress/outfit" and maybe have that as a bit of a convo starter. You could also say something as simple as "you look great". Simple and casual. Totally love your smile is just cheesy.

Depends. The best 2 ways I've found are to smile genuinely, look them right in the eye for about half a second and say thanks or something cocky like I know, or duhhhh.

I give compliments whenever I feel like it. If I like their outfit, shoes, hair, I say it. Like you know when you pick up a girl for a date and she looks extra good and you think "wow you look great tonight", just say it instead of only thinking it. I refuse to compliment girls just because they gave me one.
