Serious answer: as long as it takes to meet the goal you went into monk mode for, and, when you meet the goal, STOP. When I wanted a better job, I went into monk mode and devoted all my extra time toward getting another job. You can't really monk mode getting in shape because that's a lifestyle change. But, you can monk mode cooking your own meals and going through cookbooks, teaching yourself to cook and focusing completely on making great tasting healthy food. You can do a mini monk mode and clean up your house, car, get rid of old stuff and make your place always ready for company. I think one mistake people make in monk mode is focusing on too many different subjects at once and then assigning a length of time.

Take a piece of paper and write down 20 goals you want to acomplish. Put that paper away for 24 hours. Take it back out and circle your top five off of the list you made. Now on a new piece of paper make a plan for each of these five goals. When you have completed enough of these five goals that going and catching some tail WILL NOT stop you from accomplishing at the rest of your plan. You may come out of monk mode.
