How to get respect at work

Respect doesn't come from how people treat you, it comes from you getting shit done.

Here's an anecdote from my own life that might help:

At 22 I became the "wing man" for the CTO of a company (100+ employees, so not big corporation but not small by any rate). Not only was I the youngest person in the company, I was younger than the kids of some of the employees I was supposed to help (read: oversee and stir their projects because the CTO was too busy).

I had a relatively large amount of power, since I had the ear of the CTO and could influence many technical decisions even if they weren't going on in my team... I mean, I could literally get people fired.

How I played it ? Stayed 100% positive with everyone. Don't talk bad about people, recommend people for a raise. When the CTO wants something from a team, don't try to give commands, go out for a cigarette with some of them and start asking them "How would you do it ?" and "What do you think about this plan ?".

If someone has a great idea, act as a gateway between them and management.

If you are on friendly terms with people and not seen as a superior, this will motivate people to get shit done. Act as the robinhood for "the little guy", they will eat that shit up. You have an amazing power that the other managers don't have, that of being "one of the guys".

So don't view their friendliness as a threat to your authority, view it as an opportunity to have them get shit done. If your CEO is a man worth working for, he isn't looking for employees kissing your ass, he's looking for results.

Work on your posture if you haven’t already, dress sharp if you aren’t already, have a serious face on at work, and if they still don’t get the message simply address it directly by saying you don’t tolerate the games anymore.

That's where you messed up. Nobody likes being "downgraded" in a relationship of any kind so this attitude isn't entirely unjustified. It's really not any different from a girl downgrading sex with you ("no more BJs" -> starfish -> dead bedroom) or a guy downgrading a girl from LTR to plate.

Understand that if you try to enforce a more professional attitude now they won't like you anymore. Co-workers in my opinion aren't real friends or brothers because they can and will throw you under the bus for a higher pay if they get the chance, so don't be afraid to be more strict.

Keep a strong frame. I work with women and being above average looking and not an autist helps.

Keep well groomed and smell nice etc

Try not to get into office politics unless you’re the one manipulating the situation for personal gain.

Be friendly both to the ugliest and the babes equally.

Don’t shit where eat. Now I feel like a hypocrite saying this since I tried but failed to close with a HB9 from work recently, but my strong frame helped brush that aside “I’m a flirt outside of work, isn’t everyone?”.

Don’t be too nice, don’t beta orbit work girls on fb. Now I do do have work girls on fb but they added me not other way round. I don’t comment on their selfie pics and rarely on their status updates, if I do it’s a pic of a pet and I’ll post something witty or “awww”.

Treat them like normal people especially the babes. Now I’m lucky that I get on with everyone, since I’m not bad looking, funny and in good shape.

you need to not stoop to the low levels. dont be super social, dont waste time making jokes, and dont spend time accepting jokes from others. your high up now, you dont have time to waste.

you need to act like you have a lot of shit to do and dont have time for bullshit. after a while it will appear natural and be what it is.
