How useful is online learning like Cousera?

Coursera courses are really hit-or-miss. I have done some that were great, and a lot more that sucked ass. Some were extremely basic (AP level), one or two were around 4th year undergrad level (or intro graduate level if your schooling sucked), most seem to be 1st year undergrad (or community college) level. As the other poster said, Coursera is good for using it to direct your own self-study.

Certifications get you past HR drones and into interviews. That's all. Once in the interview, you're pretty much on your own and all the credentials in the world wont help. Of course, course experience does give you another source of things to draw on in the interview. At the same time, 500$ is not bad for a "certificate." It costs about the same as one from a community college, and I'd think it would carry about as much weight.

I'll answer you from both sides, as I run a marketing company.

As a student - it's a nice bridge between a full blown uni course and complete self study; the best I got out of it was where to direct my self-studying efforts.

As an employer - with direct response marketing, I don't pay for your qualifications, I pay for what you can produce. Quals or no quals. I generally make an assessment of whether an applicant is going to be pleasant to work with and if he can follow instructions. The rest is what he produces and how well he plays in the team. People who blag their way in are weeded out very quickly.

My personal advice: -Experience will trump quals. -Always answer the question asked; you'll never believe how much people get carried away. If I'm not framing things correctly, let me know and give me options.
