I think the best way to dichotomize it is to look at what your intentions are. 1) joking around with a friend just having a good time. Shitting on them a little bit, they all laugh but no ones feelings are really hurt. I shit on myself sometimes too. This is fun and enjoyable to an extent, but if you go overboard it can be the insecure kind.

2) Intending to put someone in their place because they have challenged you or have threatened your status. It comes off as petty and insecure because you're doing it out of fear, to protect yourself, and not because you're all just having a good time.

If it's someone you don't know it's best to agree and amplify or something, not start belittling them back. The idea is to let them see your dominant frame that they cannot dent.

Why roast someone when you can simply tease them? You are less likely to burn any bridges and more likely to maintain plausible deniability. Also, why tear someone down? They do that to themselves if they deserve it.
