Life Changing Decision

Hey guys,

I could really use some advice on what to do next in my life as I have no idea.

My situation is as follows. I graduate with my Masters in March (next month) with an MBA in business. I was on the soccer team for my University in America being somewhat of a big shot and now soccer is done I find myself confused and not sure what to do next with loads of free time and a total mind change. Being an international student in America, to stay in the country means I must apply for an OPT and then find work which means I can work in America for a year. If the company like me after a year they need to sponsor me and pay extra fees to have me.

Now, I haven’t exactly got a company yet but I am in the middle of looking. My school has close ties to the MLS companies and I am hoping something sparks there. I have applied to ten jobs but still waiting to hear back. I paid the 500-dollar fee to apply for my OPT and I receive that in three months. On the financial side, my father isn’t helping me much but my mum sends me money behind his back to help me out. I have 1,200 dollars in my bank, barely able to survive as you see at this rate.

On the other hand, my family lives in Europe and I don’t want to move back into my parents’ house. In the country my parents live, I don’t really want to find work. However, I could go back, play soccer there for my team and look for jobs, but it would make finding a job in America even harder if I leave. I am currently banging this hot girl here too in America, I know she shouldn’t be part of the decision but if I leave America and go home I guess I lose that too and she is an HB9 and will just find another dude.

I really don’t know what to do, what choice to make, honestly. I find myself doing nothing here each day, finding a job is so hard. I know you could say that life is at my fingertips and the world is my oyster but I have no fucking clue what I want to do next. I want a job in marketing and communications but don’t want to work for a shitty company.

1) Forget about the HB9. Yeah, she'll almost definitely leave you if you go back to Europe, but guess what, there's no guarantee she'll stick around if you stay, either. Abundance Mentality. Don't let her determine your life's course.

2) Finding a job is tough, especially when you have no experience. If you can leverage your scholastic soccer career into something with the MLS, that will be useful; most other industries could give a shit if you were a soccer star otherwise. So use what you've got.

3) See (2) - You have no experience, so you may end up in a shitty company. Maybe a couple of them. Obviously, try to avoid that, but if it keeps you in the US (and that is what you want), then it has served its purpose. Aim high, but have a Plan B. Maybe the best companies don't want you. Maybe you're not a unique and special snowflake and have to suck it up with a B-tier company until you prove yourself.

4) Don't do nothing each day. Find your mission. If it's to find a job, then do 1 thing every day that drives towards that goal. See the getmotivated subreddit or one of the others for further help with that.

Do you have any good sources to start looking for a job or begin that?

Only general advice: You're in an MBA program? They're doing you a disservice if they don't help you network / get you in touch with their alumni network. That's really one of the main purposes of getting an MBA - it's not what you know, it's who you know.

It doesn't sound like you've availed yourself of too much of what is available in that regard, but it's not too late. Devote your remaining time at your program to networking, talking to all of your professors, going to every single networking event you can, etc.

You said you've applied to 10 jobs?

a) That's not going to cut it. Your odds aren't good. To paraphrase another quote about squatting - If someone was going to kill you and your family unless you got two job offers in the next month, would you apply to two jobs and call it good? Or ten? You'd probably be churning out applications the entire time until you got the two offers, right?

Put another way...You like fucking your HB9? If someone showed you a picture and said "Check her out - you can fuck her regularly, all you need to do is apply for 5 jobs a day" Would you be all "Nah, I'm good", or would you crank out five applications and get to the fucking part?

Look, you're young, so you don't have the perspective yet. But leverage what you've got. Pretty sure you're not in the first year of the soccer program existing. There must be players from other years? Ones you know? They're working somewhere, right? Hit them up. All of them. Almost guaranteed one of them has got a job for you, knows someone or "heard about xyz company hiring" and knows the head of HR.

When it comes down to it, for the most part, unless you're at Harvard, Stanford, etc., no one gives a shit about your MBA. Certainly not compared to their friend, or their buddy's friend that they can bring in for an interview. Be that buddy's friend.

Again, not everyone has been a big-deal soccer player at the university level. Really leverage that however you can to get introductions into the MLS companies. You said you're
