6 months to study for the mcat and needing modafinil? LOL. If he needs that for pre med stuff he's gonna be fucked going into surgery.

I agree that OP should be a science major (biology or related) or at least take more than just the premed science courses to get an idea of what the content will be like and what study skills will be necessary (which are gonna be slightly different than the ones that help you excel in say math). A lot of people change course early into college.

Regardless, OP, you need to learn time management and the discipline to get get work done. If you're naturally smart you'll cruise through the rest of high school and college but if you never develop discipline, 1st year of med school will kick your butt. Content wise it's easier than undergrad but there is so much you need to learn that if you dont have the skills to manage the workload you'll have no time for healthy habits (working out, meditating, socializing) or any extra curriculars that help get you into top residency programs.

You should also pursue extracurriculars like research, volunteering, and shadowing in college. But in order to get all the hours in, you again have to learn to manage those hours and stay on task.

Once you do that, everything will be much easier. Going back to the topic of the mcat, if you learn to manage your time you won't have to cram shit for your premed courses which means no need for modafinil as well as good long term retention. Which means less time you need to dedicate to the mcat (3 months) because that period will be review.

When you're older and things finally get tough, like surgery rotations where you wake up at 3-4am and come home at 7pm only to discover you still have to study, that's when you can get help from outside stuff like modafinil.

One last thing, build a sense of curiosity. Question the why and the how of everything around you. Your skill with people and patients will be better. Your ability to pick up information will be better because you'll genuinely be interested. And you'll have a bunch of background knowledge so that when studies get more difficult, you'll have probably seen of bunch of that information before and thus need less time learning base facts and have more time for the nitty gritty that will help you excel.
