One thing I love about asktrp is we give it to each other straight, no bullshit and we call each other out on shit or stupid behaviour when asking question. I have a question about something that will effect my life massively and I'm on the fence and although its not relationship advice I would appreciate your points of view. Its 4am here in the UK and I cant sleep.
My childhood was shit for the want of a better word; my dad was involved with a extremely conservative christian group (almost cult like in nature). He ruled his home with an iron first and I can remember being beaten for talking back, or doing something tiny or insignificant wrong. In short I fucking hate him and all throughout my childhood had fantasies of killing him.
I moved out of their home as soon as I was able. I am athiest and forever hold a massive grudge against all religion. My relationship with my mum has always been great and will continue to be great although she used to let him beat the shit out of me, but you could tell it broke her heart and she would always do everything she could to show she loved me.
My dad makes his living as a joiner. He worked hard, extremely hard to give me and my siblings a home. I can remember him working mon-sat 8-6 in a physical back breaking job.
During the ecconmic collapse his small business was hit hard. I am an accountant and recently looked over his books. His income dropped by almost 2/3s. Being proud and the only earner (mum doesnt work) he got on with it. Began to struggle with his monthly commitments and started borrowing money.
He remortgaged so he has around £18,000 owed there. He has £6000 in credit cards which accumulated when he couldnt make payments at certain times due to his income collapsing. £2500 overdraft. His debt is around £26500.
He is now 62 and honestly he can't really physically do what he was able to in the past and as his job is physical he is fucked for want of a better word. Its basically at crisis point.
My mum called me and informed me of all this a week ago and before that I had no idea.
I have my own flat, my own mortgage. I make decent money and I could help but it would stretch me to financial breaking point as well.
I have been considering letting my flat to cover the mortgage, moving back in to my childhood home. I've made a budget and I feel I could clear all of their debt £26500 in 2 years without any help, so shorter assuming my father continues to contribute.
The decision I'm struggling with is should I help this cunt or let him sink in the ship he built.
for clarity: My father has never helped me with any of my life achievements at least not directly. He made me leave school at 16 to get a job. I paid for my first car, I saved for my deposit for and I spend most of my early 20s educating myself for a job outside of trades and labour. However his hard work mentallity, along with his alpha persona did help shape me.
