For a Man: Ability to control one's thoughts and actions that would make him the provider of resources and protector of interests of his mate and offspring conceived through her. The man should'nt be distracted away from the actions mentioned above when a female of higher SMV than her mate is present.

For a woman: Ability to contain her feelings for sexual contact when a male of SMV higher than her mate is accessible to her. She should be able to be loyal enough that the offsprings that she is raising with her mate is his and only his.

I believe the term is self-aware. Self-aware women have quite the loyalty. They will admit the hamster is a real thing and they learn to control it. Just like guys that learn to control their testosterone.

Pair-Bonding: When a man and woman "love" each other. Aka, Man is firmly committed, woman needs man to survive(essentially). This bond can help them keep their hamsters in check. Specifically the man's desire to cheat/harem and the woman's desire to find a better man.

How does it happen?

I'm so not qualified to answer your question, but I've been rolling around the specifics of this a lot lately.

Considering Briffault's Law, a woman with no experience switching partners is less likely to bail because she only associates providers as 1. Her family and 2. Her first husband(or other equivalent partner; and hopefully sex). With more experience in independance/switching partners, she would be more capable in realizing her options, hence the down slope in marriage success vs partner count.

This makes sense to me. As for the termanology, I think this whole thing is a mix of different people's perspectives of similar scenarios. Since men and women bond in different ways (he's all about her and she's all about her's*), "pair bonding" doesn't quite fit as the correct term, but it serves the purpose as representing the essential sentiment of the man and woman wanting to stay together.
