What the hell. Anything, hips, shoulder, waist, etc would be less awkward than this photo. Use common sense, this isn't RP, this is just basic sense. It's like asking "What is the correct RP way to do a handshake?" There is none - you just shake the fucking hand.

Put your arm around their back and rest your hand on their waistline. (Usually either lower back right above the ass or right on the hip.) I like a place that is comfortable but still allows me to reel them in tight. Especially in pictures pull them in against your body. Women like body contact too and this is a way to show confidence with a hint of dominance but it all takes place in a safe social contract where closeness is expected.

Basically you have to lead them. Put them where they're supposed to be. In your arms. That's where they're expecting to go anyway. You're only getting caught in awkward positions because you are too scared to do what you're supposed to do.

:) This one takes time. I think a little bit of awkwardness beats the smarmy "trying too hard" body language. Learning how to use gestures without overdoing it helps.

As far as that pic, you know where your hands are supposed to go there, right? A non-grabby, non-squeezy, non-massagey simple open-palm touch on a woman's mid-back or upper arm during conversation is usually permitted, and if not, it's a good indicator. You can then "lead" her gently through a social space. It's like a dance. If you have to think about it, you're not there yet, but keep practicing.
