Here is what you need to internalize: Criticism, hate, and any other feedback is not about you. This is an essential concept. Once you believe it, your ego is no longer threatened. When you realize that a shit-test, rejection, challenge, insult, or whatever is actually about the person delivering it, your entire perspective changes. This kind of feedback is always an opinion. You can choose to say, "No, your opinion is wrong." This goes for positive feedback as well. When someone compliments you, remember that recognizing your strengths makes them feel good. That was an epiphany for me.
One must practice socializing to improve. That goes for absolutely everything in life. You cannot learn to throw a ball by reading about it. You cannot learn to socialize without doing it, failing, and doing it again.

DiamondBack has solid advice and the best teacher is experience. Are there any resources available to you to explore this avenue? Such as a theater/argumentation/speech class? If not the best way is to talk to everyone until you figure it out.

I always hated the term "social skills".

Just get out and talk to people EVERYWHERE.
