There are two different kinds of insults in social situations. The first one is playful insults, in which you should role with it and keep an IDGAF attitude like you tried. Then there are insults in which someone is attempting to use you to socially elevate themselves. In this case I usually give this person an extremely calm(the kind of calm you have before you give a sly smirk, but without actually smirking) expressionless look.no words. maybe a single syllable "hah" and continue a different conversation. Or they insist on using you. You can set a boundary with them. not in a bitchy bitch boy way. In a way that demonstrates self respect. Say calmly "you didn't learn any manners did you." and if he insists further shut him down completely. "don't talk to me." but make sure all of this is done with a calm IDGAF emotion. You should be communicating with him as if he is an annoyance, not a threat to your value. Because your mindset should be IDGAF. Also take a look at the mindset your communicating with the group. If you are properly demonstrating value and a lack of caring the only insults you should be receiving are playful pokes(which are really attempts to connect with someone they see as valuable). hope that helps.

How about you actually don't give a fuck?

By being emotionally invested you've already lost the battle man. When you're not emotionally invested you can think with a clear head and get back at him. If you're going to be emotionally invested and get angry, then both guys and girls are just going to mock you more. I learned this the hard way. Lasted for a whole year. I always thought being angry would make them empathize or some shit but it just makes them laugh. They're not evil, people are pretty solipsist in these kinds of situations and just get a laugh out of it. I'm not saying to just take it, but you really should NOT be offended by a random fucktard's words - that's entering his frame. Give it back, but maintain frame. This sorta hit close to home, which is why I'm typing all this.

TL;DR Change your mindset, not your faking abilities.

Laugh, the only two people I'd care if they insulted me are my parents, they brought me to this world and at least half of my current success in life I owe to them, so I'd say they pretty much have the right to have my concern.

First of all, don't end up in a situation where you are being insulted. If you're friend is insulting you, they are not really your friend. Get rid of that garbage.

I've been working on setting boundaries. If someone does something stupid I'll call them out right then and there and ask him questions that he won't be able to answer and make them look like an idiot -- I only do this if it is warranted though. If you do this other people will be less likely to insult you. If they do, you can usually ignore what they said (it's better than being defensive) or flip the script and go on the offense if it's something stupid.
