The answer that really is most correct is /u/eat-sleep-jre-train's: "when you want and feel like crying". But, that doesn't adequately express how a man cries. /u/harkrank is more on point. If you're truly an adult male, you'll cry only when it's acceptable, necessarily -- when you experience deep loss.

So really, the answer is -- when you're a grown man, you'll always only cry when it's ok to. Weird answer, but it's the truth.

You should be in touch with your own emotions. Cry when you need to. If you cry because you're not getting your way you are a child and not a man. If you cry for other reasons it's okay. Don't ask people on the internet how you should relate to your emotions. They are part of your soul.

A man should never, ever cry in front of a woman over ANYTHING within the relationship.

A man may cry in front of his woman: 1) when his daddy dies, 2) when his momma dies, 3) at the death of a child, 4) that last ten minutes of "Old Yeller," and 5) That scene in The Dirty Dozen where Sam Brown has to make that run with the grenades. You know he's not gonna make it, but he goes anyway because: duty, honor, fraternity.

Plus, crying in front of your woman includes: a few manly tears and then sucking it the fuck up. No sobbing, and if there's any snot, you've been crying too long.

Men also do not do tears of joy. However, in a joyful moment such as the birth of his son it is permissible to wipe at his watery eyes and complain about the dust in the room.

Show no weakness. It's fine & human to mourn the loss of a child, a parent, a close relative, lost all your money, that kind of thing, but don't show weakness. If you can't show stoic strength that you will solve whatever problem faces you, better to show nothing at all.

Tears of joy at birth of a child are just fine just don't be a crying girl. If you're crying more than the new mother is you're doing it too much.

I'm depressed and I find it difficult to cry - hell, I find it difficult to express any emotion, but when I cry (once in a blue moon) I bawl my eyes out but only when I'm on my own or with someone who understands.

Death of mother only. Birth of child. At child's death, if you cry, its mother will lose attraction for you and blame you for the death and every other Bad Thing. Gotta be a fuckin rock. You must comfort its mother. Hard to do when you're a blubbering idiot. At death of father, you show respect to him by being stoic.

You can get misty at the death of a beloved dog.
