thousands of years ago, we had to be quick and adapt or die. If something becomes familiar or comfortable, then you lose that need to adapt. The fight keeps people alive, not the ready-to-order whopper at the drive-thru.

Those who respect you less over time never really learned how to respect people in general. They were just hiding their inability to respect others and eventually their true "flare" or colors came to the surface. Conversely, those who were taught how to respect others will increase their respect over time as they get to know you.

Respect doesn't mean false flattery. Those who respect you will tell you the truth even if it isn't pleasant to hear but they tell you the truth because they respect you more.
