Monogamy is useful for offspring. Done correctly (female monogamy), they are yours and you are around to parent them. Without female monogamy you are a bunch of cave men waiting in line to bang and no one knows whose load knocked her up.

It is also useful for mate guarding in short term relationships to reduce the risk of STIs but I don't think the risk of STIs is that great to warrant the hassle.

Status -- if they are attractive, and you can keep them genuinely happy and all over you, it immediately boosts your SMV.
Emotional aspect -- a casual relationship will bail when it gets tough. A good girlfriend/wife is cleaning up your puke when you're sick, and telling you "it's going to be okay, we'll figure it out" when you fall on hard times.
Kids -- very important, depending on which culture you come from. There's some pathetic pride in western women that want to hate on having children, but they usually end up sad losers later in life and I generally distrust any woman that openly brags about how she hates kids/doesn't want kids
Combining resources -- a good wife/girlfriend is supposed to make your life easier. When things work between the both of you, and both people are active and busy without a lopsided workload, there is no time to think of anything else or to fuck around. It takes time, money, and effort to raise kids and keep a house together.

Very few people that meet each other in life meet this criteria for each other. And unfortunately we are no longer raised with the important skills to make these things work in life. It is easy to understand how people could confuse what a committed relationship for casual shit.
