The best tips I can give you for day game is to develop a habit of talking to strangers. This can be from asking the time or simply small conversations to pass the time. The more you do it the better it will become. Once you are comfortable, then you can move on to making your intentions known.

I like coffee shops where they call out names when drinks are ready. Sit close enough to hear and remember her name. Assuming she grabs a table, wait a few minutes then walk over and ask if her name is <whatever name was called>. If her eyes light up, she's probably interested in a chat. Introduce yourself and hold her hand for as long as she holds yours, while making eye contact and smiling. You'll have to be clever about the 'how did you know my name?' question that will come. But it can also lead to a whole conversation. If she's really sharp, she'll be onto the game very quick. Then it's time to come clean. This is the danger of of this approach because you'll look like a real chump if you don't play it right.

Alternately (and preferably), if you visit it frequently you can find other regulars and remember their names. Introduce yourself when they're waiting for their coffee, then when their name is called you can say, "Maybe I remembered it from hearing them call your name. You've been here before, right?" I like this approach when possible because it is truthful, and genuine, and whole lot less creepy.
