Just relax and try to start up a random chat about whatever happened in class, try to make her laugh a little. Is this college or HS? As for the best friend, they are probably just the guard dog. Be nice, introduce yourself to both of them.

Gossip is something you need to remain above and pay no attention to. It doesn't go away as you grow older, sadly.

So do yourself a favor and yank that variable out of the equation. You'll thank yourself later for that.

Now, as for the girl being shy, you'll need to make her comfortable first and foremost. Lighthearted humor would be your tool of choice here. Same goes with the friend. It's all a matter of eliciting the proper emotions.
