"Hello, I am not from here and my phone just died, could you tell me where I can find x"

By opening up with this, you can now gauge what kind of mood she is in first. If she is smiling and answering you with enthusiasm, you can reveal your real intention.

"You know what? Actually I am pretty familiar with this place, I really just needed an excuse to talk to you"

If she seems cold and withdrawn, she is probably not in the mood for you hitting on her and you can just say "ok, thank you" and then leave and probably save yourself from a very awkward interaction.

Has anyone tried anything like this? Could it work or is it too cheesy?
