A few things are happening.

1) Emotions - The technique has some specific emotional reaction. Girls like to feel. Everybody does, that's why we listen to music.

2) Anticipation - Every little "trick" you use makes her want more. Every joke makes her want to laugh more. Every tease makes her want to tease you back. Every cold read, every compliment, everything - she wants more. If she wants something from you, maybe she can get what she wants my trading something.

3) Display of Overall Value - At a higher level, your actions, verbal, and nonverbal, is telling her about you. It is a display of value, of who you are. These aren't jokes, this guy is funny. He's witty. He's talented. He's assertive. Etc.

As for when?

She wants more rather quickly. But it fades quickly.
