You should start by understanding the concept behind NLP, the “filter”, and start by the foundation, grow from there.

Also one thing that got me to understand the concept better: It’s not about getting people to think like you, to convince them of your “way of tought”, but the opposite: Understanding how people feels, how they might think and understanding there filter by putting you in their point of view, understanding their map of the world. It’s all about understanding someone and directing him by his values.
