I think it's always good to trust your own experience and be willing to experiment with awareness. Buddha said many things about suffering and the cause and solution of suffering etc. But unless you have the guts to test things on your own you will always be an uncertain righteous Buddhist follower and not a leader like the Buddha himself who experimented and found the truth for himself.
