"If they can do it so can I."
Even though I've done more work and not gotten there? That's logically unsound dude.

Yess. It's a dark hole. You can be happy for other people for some time but if they are constantly wining and you are not then you can't help but to resent at them.

And luckily, the people who do this also have the balls to make fun of me for it, patronize me, and tear me down mentally.
At this point an early grave is the biggest win I can hope for. And that's the plan

All of these are spot on! I've lost so many friends from 3. I used to complain and whine every day to my friends about something, it drove them away. Honestly, if there's any 1 thing to take away from this, it's to be a person who gives and not takes. If you're constantly whining and complaining or being a negative nancy, you're taking away from other people's joy. If you manage to meet the bare minimum of being a decent person and providing positivity, you'll be in good shape

Those are all very good traits to have — I can’t take people who are so negative and paranoid — they’re just not fun to hang around with so I don’t

Number 1 and 3 I just can never be. I can't be positive when i have had a horrible life

I've been in this vicious circle of misery too. Came out of it through therapy and books and moocs and cartoons. Hope this inspires you.

My entire adult life I’ve lived with my head in a noose with my feet balancing, teetering on the back of a chair. Deep in my heart I’ve always felt it’s a matter of time.
I’ve spent my entire adult life (I’m 35) fighting against this and feeling like my perception of reality is the and accurate and therefore my depressive state is justified.
“Scratch any cynic and you’ll find a disappointed idealist” - George Carlin.
I’ve only recently found a point where I’ve found contentment/ fulfilment and excitement for my future. I’ve stepped down from that proverbial chair.
Now I realise my entire adult life’s search for happiness has been nothing more than me finding peace with the way the world is.
When you get to this point, stoicism essentially (without me even knowing what it was), you can be positive without feeling like you’re some naive close minded person who is oblivious to how the world is.
I used to resent happy people, I would think “look at this simpleton. So vapid and vain. There’s no way you can be happy in this life like that without being stupid”
And maybe I was right or, maybe they were already at the place that I am now?

Interesting perspective. I just think the bottom line is some people recover from depression and some don't.

Sometimes rock bottom is the only way up. Speaking from experience, anhedonia and all.

For how many years ? I've had mine since childhood for a decade now

From age 15 to 19. The break for me was realising that “perception is reality”. Meaning that what you perceive about yourself, others and the world is just a perception, based on a list of presuppositions that are driven by longstanding belief systems.
Presuming that medications are not in the mix, which will alter your ability to process and interpret reality, when you are able to crack what it is exactly is your perception you can dismantle your entire mental state.
It sounds all esoteric and woo woo but perception is reality to the individual even if false.
