Agreed. Girls have guy friends. Would you want her to get mad if you told a story about one of your female friends? Not everything is a shit test. Sometimes it's just talking.

I'm going agree Math that it is better, but also agree with Rum that is still not ideal. Here is what I would do. If a girl is talking about something awesome a male friend did, I would reply by saying something to the effect of, "No shit? I have a buddy who did that or something similar, except he failed miserably and it was hilarious." Direct the conversation away from the original male subject without inflating yourself or deflating him. All the while you are still keeping the conversation going and them laughing.
Critiques on this approach would also be appreciated.

If you act a little sarcastic it may divert the attention a little, but mainly just divert the attention without being a dick about it and talk about other stuff thats interesting.

This sounds like it could be a good idea, with a bit of tweaking. Adding sarcasm to the mix makes it a bit petty, but what you said about locking eye contact, slight smile and all that is good as long as you take the sarcasm out of it.
Without the sarcasm, what you're telling her is: I really don't care about your male friend, and I'm not a child, so I'm not going to sit here and try and one up him either. Instead I'm going to show you how little I care about your friend who 'beheaded three tigers and shoved them up his ass in Africa', and let you change the subject.
I think replacing the sarcasm with indifference makes this much better.

This is pretty much what I have been doing. Girl talking about some guy, good or bad, doesn't matter. "Oh that's neat".
