a hug is actually a complex task. If you hug too much its more of a bear hug that is friendzony. A baby pat on the back is aloof and borderline disrespectful, a hug that lasts too long puts you and her both in a spot especially if its awkward and you don't know her well. A hug should mainly be at the end of a date, but some girls will hug a guy if there's a celebration (such as you're playing skeeball and you win a bunch of tickets, a joy hug for example).
An out of the blue hug can be creepy, quit worrying about kino, life is not that structured.

Before going for the hug, you gotta make sure you have at the very least a bit of rapport going on, and that you were able to "tickle" her emotionally, whether that be by playful teasing, or by getting her invested in the conversation (ergo, by displaying genuine interest in what makes her tick).
See how she responds to lower-level kino first, I'd say. If she's into it, then you can consider the hug within your next steps. One thing to make it easier is to ensure the mood's lightened up as much as possible, so it won't be a big deal no matter what.
