Demonstrating value vs Self qualifying

So telling an interesting story about myself can "show value", however at what point would this be me qualifying myself?

An example is during The Great Gatsby, Gatsby is constantly showing value, but at the same time he is qualifying himself

Of course showing value=good, self qualify=bad
