Thats not how you build muscle though. Firstly you did not consume enought protein (as no normal diet does), and secondly, hucking hay does not is not ideal for building muscle.

Also, when you talk about "gym muscle" what exactly are you talking about? Most weightlifting exercises is based around our largest muscles. Those we use for generally everything. True, we focus more on mass than whats optimal for endurance, but i assure you the muscles are more than functional.

Believe me man. I used to hate on weightlifting aswell. I used to swim 3 times a week for 1-2 years. Didn't gain any significant mass. Though to myself; tall guys just cant be big, im 6'3".

Then by share luck, the buffest guy i know moves into my dorm. I ask him if he can show me some things. Half a year later ive added 15kg in muscles and look a lot better. I can look in the mirror and think "nice". Girls look at me different. I shit you not even my own mother said "you look like a man now".

Give it a try. Its a lot to learn in the first month, invest some in a PT that knows bodybuilding. Take a picture in your boxers. Take another one in 2 months. If you do things correctly, you wont even recognize your former self, and think "wtf i was that skinny?". It seriously improved my life, give it a shot. The sticky on 4chan.org/fit is a very good start.

Ive done a little gym work to help with a certain cycling sport I do but its all explosive muscle usage so the work out is small reps and big weights. Helped me not pull my back every month or two but thats it. Just riding built better muscles for riding where weight training barely could build the basis. Muscle for things like bucking hay, cycling, lifting heavy shit from under the pickup, dirt biking and holding robots without brakes is what I need. Big arms or chest or legs really isnt gonna help any of that in any way. Most of that needs endurance as well as strength.

Im the small scrawny guy of the bunch but Im also the one people ask to do heavy lifting. Its usually my buddies that lift alot that ask me for help with heavy things. In the gym you work a small portion and most people work unimportant muscles for looks only as you have stated. The core is by far the most important and used for everything. I really lack the time or the interest in muscle building as well as the finances but mostly the interest. Im lean but toned and chiseled and Im fine with that.

That high protein diet just doesnt work on me. My metabolism is too fast. I am literally hungry 10 minutes after a buffet meal and if I do manage a buzz its gone by the time I can get the next drink ready. I barely gained 40 pounds since graduating high school, 6 years ago, at 89 pounds despite any effort. Even lost the freshman 15 in college instead of gain it. When biking season is here and I have time the food bill just gets stupid.

I kind of think you missunderstand how a lot of muscles work. They cant just be filled with empty mass, they have to be either very strong or enduring, with empathis on the former for mass, but not that much. You are not adding fake strength, just adding strength in the most efficient way possible.

Also core is a huge part of weightlifting. A lot of the main lifts, like deadlift, shoulders, rely on core. Also there is no shortage of people that works towards a sixpack (which is en essence, core) although thats primarily a bodyfat% thing.

There is a myth that bodybuilders work "small non-practical muscles that isnt used for anything". We mainly work our biggest muscles, and there is a evolutionary reason for why they are big. Chest, back, core, shoulders and legs are used for everything.

The arms, yes i agree, not often very practical to be able to move your lower arms strongly. But chest and back? Thats like basically the muscles you use for lifting heavy shit from under the pickup and holding things back, like robots.

Also, fast metabolism, really unlikely. Its not like your stomach empties faster because of it. Most likely a quality-of-food thing. And even if, just eat some more. Add a extra schoop of protein.

Belive me, the reason im writing this long replies is because i care, i was where you was. Sitting there complaining about "function strength" even though i had no idea what bodybuilders even did. Thought to myself like a 200kg overweight woman drinking soda and complaining about genetics; "im to tall to be big. Its so much harder for tall guys to get strong. Im really strong even though i look small. Muscle mass have nothing to do with strength."

Im super lucky that i had someone to show me how fucking wrong i was. Looking back i didnt eat close to the amount of proteins i needed; i wasnt strong, just average; i gain mass as fast as any dude, maybe even faster.

Changing all exercice i did for strength is one of the best things ive ever done, and i encourage most other to also do it.
