Direct approach vs Indirect approach?

Depends on what feels more authentic and honest for the context that you are in. If you approach a random girl for no reason, no context, when there is nothing happening that justifies talking with her, then the authentic honest thign to do is to be direct, where being direct means saying something like:

"Hey i know this is random, but I like (X thing) about you, which makes me feel drawn to you right now, and i know i would regret it, if i did not get to know you real quick"

Because if you are talking with women who are random strangers in a context where socialization isn't normal or expected, then you will only confuse them at best, and cause them to distrust your intentions which raises their guards.

But if you are in a social situation like a wedding, then it might be better to just start indirectly talking about the wedding, how they know the people, etc and then gradually tranistioning into showing more interest in them on a personal level.

Imagine I'm selling something you know nothing about, and I expect you to make a decision with the first line out my mouth.

Unless you already know of what I'm selling through other means, already invested (which isn't a cold approach), your chances are very slim.

Even in the best case scenario, you want something to chew on (present some semblance of personality, allow you to warm to the situation) before you make your decision. What you say in one instance is irrelevant to having the few minutes of chat to generate 'buy in'.
