As cliche as this may sound, your best and good friend is yourself. Now don't take this the wrong way, but you said "good friends", and here you are calling one of them less attractive and not physically fit. Dude, if you're saying they're good friends, but yet, you're calling him out on this, then what does that make you, a fake friend? If you were good friends, you wouldn't say something like that about him. You are hanging around these guys building resentment and not having the SELF CONFIDENCE (courage) to be without them. Anyway, something to think about but lets continue. The thing that stands out the most is your lack of SELF confidence. You're probably the kind of guy that can't go out and have fun without a group of guys. Why would you carry competition around with you? Guys are very competitive and it doesn't matter how much of good friends you think they are, they are out to get theirs man. I'm out with a group of good friends at a night club

First off, you're in a club, which is a place geared around dancing. Do you like dancing? If so, then you should be getting into the groove after you arrive. Talking is nice and all, but that's not why people came there.

and there are a few new girls I haven't met before but whom my friends know pretty well. I spot one girl in the group who's really pretty and want to talk to her. I go to speak to her and ask her name and how come we never met before (as all the people in the group went to the same university). She seems blasé and kind of ignores

Couple things here.

"How come we never met before?" is not a good opener because it doesn't require any answer? Think about it. It's not even a yes or no question. What can she say? "I don't know." Or maybe something more if she wanted to put her mind to it. But at that point, you're just some guy who asked her an awkward question, so she has no incentive to come up with an answer.
On the other hand, if she had any spark of interest, she might have forgiven your awkward question and worked with you to start a conversation. If someone is going to ignore you, then they're not worth your time, in return.

You're overlooking the most important thing here. Which is NOT that he was speaking to her for a short time. He was DANCING with her. At a DANCE CLUB. He was sharing an experience with her that is fun. And he probably wasn't asking awkward questions. And he was comfortable with himself enough to dance. And apparently there was enough chemistry for her to give him her number.

Although getting a number might not be anything. Do you realize how many guys here get tons of numbers and post that they never get things moved further on?

And, stop comparing yourself to other guys like that. It's really unhelpful. Attraction isn't a rating system. It starts when you begin getting your shit together instead of being down on yourself.

You've missed the point. Attraction is not what you say. It's how you carry yourself. It's possible to walk into a club, make eye contact with a girl on the dance floor, make out with her, and get a number, all while saying little to nothing.

So, sure..... being able to hold a conversation is important, but it's not what truly attracts people to each other.
