Some good advice I heard today. It doesn't matter what you say. If she's attracted to you she'll like you regardless of what you say. If she isn't attracted to you, it doesn't matter what you say. The only thing that matters is that you go and say SOMETHING.

Think about it this way. If a girl you don't find attractive, comes up to you. It won't matter what she says will it? You'll reject her anyway. But if an extremely attractive girl walks up to you, she can say anything and you'll like her.

I personally like Asking relationship, sex, or other questions related to that to cold approach women(bar scenes usually). It's gets them involved in interesting discussion.

Such as

"Should you be friends first, then date so you get to know the person, or date then slowly become friends?"

"Would you date someone your not attracted too? My roommate told me he wasn't attracted to a girl but still went out with her, dates her, he likes that they can talk."

One I've been asking recently

"Have you ever said I love you to a guy first, or has the guy said he loves you first"

You'll get varied answers (decent way to screen women indiscreetly too)

I read that the idea is to make assumptions about her after you open (apparently better to say 'you look like you're a teacher' or 'you look like you're German' rather than just asking her what her job is or where she's from). However, I must admit that so far, I've not had much luck with that

Other than that, I guess just ask her name, age and stuff.

Also, if your friend has experience, ask him what he says to girls as an opener and after he opens?
