I have same experience with these. They lead always to a conversation, but when you ask for a meet-up, then it’s game over. So I have a few theories, why is like that.

1) it attracts girls who just want to talk, instead of hooking up

2) it shows neediness, because you spend time to coming up with this stuff, just to make her reply to you, and believe me “she can smell that shit miles a way”

3) it may be incongruent with your photos. If you look like buffed dude, and you open with these funny lines you kill her boner for you,

So in conclusion, they suck. Stick to the basics.
