So I'm one of those casual lurkers who has been using some of the advice and pointers on here but never really contributing... so here we go:
I'm out on Saturday night at one of my favorite haunts, a nice bar with a small dance floor that usually gets packed after 11 or so. I'm out solo, making casual conversation with those around me at the bar, relaxing and checking out the scene. I spy this gorgeous dark-brown haired, dark-brown eyed latina chatting with her friends and then making her way to the dance floor.
Perfect, because I love to dance. I ditch the beer, make my way to the floor where I cut a small amount of rug until I'm beside her and know she can see me out of the corner of her eye. I turn purposefully, make eye-contact, smile, extend my hand, and as she grabs it I lean in with my hand on her back, close to her ear and say "Como se llama?" ('What's your name?' in Spanish, although direct translation is 'What do you call yourself?' I believe)
Now that probably doesn't seem like much, in fact it's probably no different than what you or anyone else does. So why is it noteworthy in this case? Well living in Canada, spanish is certainly not that common, and where I live, you certainly wouldn't lead with it. The other important part is that I'm as white as white can be. Any assumptions she might have made about me can be tossed out the window and it's obvious I have her attention at this point.
It clearly caught her off-guard, she narrows her eyes and asks "How did you know I speak spanish?"
And the response, without missing a beat, still holding the hand, maintaining eye-contact, keeping the smile: "I know my type."
It's confident, it's funny, and below all that is the fact it's the truth. I saw her and picked her out as my type. No, I didn't KNOW she spoke spanish, but I made an educated guess and my cold read was correct. Even if she couldn't speak spanish, it would have led to a conversation about why I thought she might. Again the answer I would have given would be along the same lines: "Usually my type speaks spanish."
As it was the conversation quickly shifted to where she was from originally (Colombia, but I guessed Chile), salsa dancing, paella, my yearning to travel to Spain, and my inability to conjugate verbs correctly. There was plenty of dancing, some light kissing and we're meeting up tomorrow night to try this Tapas restaurant I've always wanted to try.
As a 30-year old, I think one of the advantages I have going for me is that I have spent enough time around so many different types of women so I am now very much aware of my type, of who and what I am looking for. Although it isn't exactly 'easy' picking out and hitting on women I am attracted to, it certainly makes it more efficient. I highly recommend figuring out what you really like in a woman. It will make your interactions more fun than daunting, the conversation flow easily and the entire experience won't be as nerve-wracking.
TL;DR: Used an effective cold read to identify someone I had a lot of interests in common with, had a great time.
