Kinda [FR] - hence I have it tagged as one. Long-time Seddit lurker and this was basically my first time actually applying anything I've learned here.

I'm 16, white, 5'10", average build (reference)

I was at a weekend camp recently and had decided to work on my wimpy social skills by talking to people who were complete strangers. Perfect opportunity to work on cold approaches without any repercussions- basically 0% chance I would see any of these people again following this weekend.

Fast forward and during lunch on the first day (about 150 people eating together) I caught a HB8 redhead looking at me and treated her with a wink/smile, thinking "Ahh what the hell, why not". Five minutes later I'm going through the lunch line and she comes up behind me, introduces herself, and strikes up a conversation.

She's someone I would have normally classified in the 'Out of my league' category of girls. Holy shit, what do I do?

My high school cross country jacket ends up saving the day. Turns out her name is Sam, she's 17, and she runs XC for her high school also. Damn, this is going better than I thought. We talk running, clothes, school, and other random stuff for 20 minutes- I'm lightly negging her, cracking corny jokes, and keeping her smiling- and then lunch ends (perfect excuse to leave and get myself composed again).

I return to the table my friends are sitting at, and proceed to blush and turn into a tomato while I'm jokingly being called a ladies man and catcalled for the next 5 minutes. I see Sam a couple of times much later that day, we go no farther than saying hi and smiling at each other.

I ended up flirting with a couple of HB6-7s that evening but it was mostly unsuccessful. Go, me!

So, how did I do? Was this pure luck or did I actually do something right? I normally can't approach girls I go to school with (maybe I'm afraid of getting rejected and then made fun of?) so I'm currently treating this as a freak incedent. Any input is appreciated, so let me say just say thanks.

TL;DR- I was at a weekend camp and did something right, ended up talking to and flirting with girls who I normally wouldn't. Was I actually successful? No idea.

Second Reddit post ever, once again from mobile so I apologise for any spelling/grammar mistakes.
