Make assumptions/guesses.
There's nothing that makes people interested than knowing what others think of them.
It's great and much better than asking questions like:"Where did you go to college".
Instead rephrase it in:"You look to me like somebody who's very interested in studying medicine".
Make assumptions, it will trigger their curiosity on why you thought that, it doesn't matter much what you assume.
But don't overdo, you should speak about what you like, asking her about her is a form of approval, it's needy.
