Hot = masculine physical/character traits
Cute = physical/character traits that have a softer/feminine/boyish aspect
Every man has some soft/feminine/boyish physical/character traits and that is not a bad thing. A lot of the most attractive people have a few feminine or androgynous traits. But as straight man you should strive for more than just cuteness. Maybe your friend gained some muscles, lost some weight or changed his behavior into a more masculine direction - or he just got older. In many contexts "cute" and "hot" will mean a similar thing - just don't be a guy that is too effeminate ...
