At the bar is normally a good place for this, it's more normal to stand right next to people, so it's not weird, and people are normally chatting as they're queuing. Just wait until you hear something you can play off, but make sure it's something/a topic that you can add value to. You don't want to jump into someones conversation and have nothing of value to add, you'd be better off with a normal cold approach.

Obviously the more people (and the more dudes) the harder it normally is, so do whatever you feel comfortable with whilst pushing your comfort limit.

This is not quite the best mentality. You shouldn't be picking groups to eavesdrop on like this, and you don't "slide" into conversations.

It's basically about having your awareness in the area at large and on all the people, in general. When you notice something you want to know or something interesting/funny, you then comment on it or ask a question about it.

I like to go to different events, but I find it incredibly difficult to walk up to circles.

Right. It's natural for it to feel difficult.

I don't know the science behind how its done.....

But you're allowing your fear to lead you to over-think this.

The things you're thinking of, are either meaningless (guy-girl ratio, # of people) or way too contrived (going to the trouble to seem "not obvious").

What you do is just pay attention to the whole scene in front of you. There are so many interesting and funny things going on around you, especially when you're out and about in places where people gather in groups. The ironic thing is that your awareness is drawn inwards when you are analyzing, but it needs to be OUT in the world around you, in order for you to have access to the information that you need to connect with the people around you.
