Collectively, it seems that women desire emotional attachment. I'm reading this right out of my Psychology textbook:

According to a study of 92 married couples in 37 cultures, women generally perfer men who are considerate, honest, dependable, kind, understanding, fond of children, well liked by others, good earners, ambitious, career oriented, form a good family, and fairly tall.

Now let's think about that for a minute. Out of that entire list, only one factor is physical, height. The other aspects of attraction are, in varying degrees, emotionally based.

Fortunately for myself, I have a compassionate side. My only problem is i'm not sure how to show it. For example, a few weeks ago, I brought a girl to the mall with me. Kino was great, conversations were great, it looked like it was going beautifully. Long story short, I stopped trying. Never put another ounce of energy into her. I still say hi when she is around my friends, but the point I am trying to make is despite how fantastic of a time we had at the mall, she still hasn't made any effort to contact me. This is dread game, right? Create an attachment, and threaten it with absence. But why wasn't this working? What was missing from our adventure at the mall...? EMOTION.

My question is on a first date, how do you show that you are considerate, honest, dependable, kind, understanding, etc...? How do you form that emotional bond, so when she is having emotional distress, she comes to you for your advice?
