How do you keep a conversation interesting?

The best way to keep a conversation going is to make things as lighthearted and easy as possible. Don't ever make it seem like you're straining to keep someone's attention or working to prolong the inevitable. I always start things off by just getting to know someone's character through the first few minutes of the interaction, if that means finding out their passions, desires, hopes, dreams, then I'll delve into those topics, but if it means leading the conversation into odd areas then I'll do that instead. I never go too deep though, I think about it in this context, if a stranger came up to me and started asking too deep of questions too fast I'd find it weird and would most likely try to get away from them as fast as possible. I would even start to lie and make the mood extremely tense so that they understood that I didn't want to be near them. It's the same thing with whoever else you want to keep the conversation going with because I'm assuming you're talking about a stranger that you've just met.
