I like to start with a picture of my penis, but not the full shaft, something more subtle. Typically, I'll take like an after-gym, full-body picture with the tip of my dick just barely sticking out of the waistband. Subtly though, so it's leaves her guessing whether or not she actually saw the tip of your dick sticking out of your waistband or maybe it was some kind of optical illusion. After that each subsequent snap/pic should just feature more of your penis.

I would just find something on her profile that you can ask her something about or maybe make a teasing joke out of. Communicates interest immediately and gets a topic going.

Women online barely ever response. Even if youre good looking.
Maybe 3 outta 20.
Better get skills without online dating tools, its way more fun abd the results are quicker.

any time I work up the confidence to hit up a girl online
You need confidence to say something to a girl ONLINE?
Really? Really?
Uhm... ok I suppose.
Ok so regardless of your confidence. Regardless of what you say or when you say it. It's a dice roll. You're always rolling the dice if that's where your interaction with the girl starts.
I've made it a habit to just say random shit to girls online. Since I've been going on adding sprees on FB for shits and giggles. I just come up with weird or straight up stupid openers. One asked me why I didn't just literally say "hey". That was funny.
Your best bet is to make a relevant reference. Maybe to a sentence attached to a pic or something. But even then if you don't quite hit the spot you'll look like you're trying to be unique. Not that you noticed it completely randomly and felt like it's a good convo starter.
Since this is as low as the risk can get. This is also pretty much as low as the reward can get. In fact both have the minimum of 0. If you don't go to the same school and don't frequent the same venues, the risk is bloody 0. But then same thing with the reward.
I guess if this seems like an immensely daunting task, you'll get over... online approach anxiety?
In general you don't have your best tools at your disposal when it comes to doing it online.
The two things that swing things immensely in your favor:
Being very attractive.
Having an excellent social life that you show off with regularity on social media.
If you're even a 7/10 you're not gaining a lot of points.
If your social life is average you're not gaining point here either.
And those dudes are probably not messaging girls online because they have an entire phone book for that.
It can work. Sure. Even without having a lot of those things under your belt. My ex-best friend, I started talking to her on FB.
But never rely on it and never expect anything to come from it.

From what I have experienced, don't just say hi or hey :) and some like cheesy pickup lines. Girls get swarmed a lot. Gotta stand out. They also are often shallow as fck.

Yeah, that's what I've found. I've often been left on read or even blocked when I send a simple "Hey"

How to talk to women in general
Don't talk to women online when you can't even hold a conversation with women in real life
In fact, don't do online dating at all. Unless you are at least physically 9/10 hot, you are wasting your time
I know what you're thinking; online dating will be a lot easier because X reasons. In reality, you're just doing online dating because rejection doesn't hurt as much as in real life
Work on daygame and night game. Rejection is the best way to learn and improve. There are other numerous reasons why game in real life is a lot easier/better/more rewarding in both the short and long run
Seriously, unless you are physically very attractive, you're wasting your time. If you think changing your online profile and photos will help, sure it'll help slightly but not nearly as much as you think.
If you think I'm lying or giving wrong information, ask anyone here who has wasted months on tinder/OKC/POF for maybe one or two numbers that didnt amount to anything
