I have been reading this book, 'Interpersonal Communication', for my class Interpersonal Communication. If you take the time to read this book, I think it will really help your finding and wooing of a partner. The book is by Kory Floyd.
Example: In one part of the book it discusses conversation differences between males and females. Females are more expressive with one another when they talk, expressive talk. Males are more solution orientated, instrumental talk.
Problem:(Reference from page 59) Shannon: My boss is totally blaming for losing one of our biggest accounts--but it's completely his fault! He's the one who never returns the customer's calls and wouldn't let help last year when one of their shipments was delayed.
Solution(s): Max: You should call your regional manager and tell her what's going on. Show her the paperwork from the order that got delayed so she'll see that you tried to help.
Sabrina: That's so unfair! I'm sorry he's blaming you--you must be so frustrated, especially since it's his fault in the first place.
I found that incredibly useful as one way to keep people interested in talking to you is by some sort of mimicking and uses of ways to make them feel comfortable. Some of you may think it's a load of crap but when I read that I completely had the thought of my last interaction with a woman where she complained about her classes and I offered a solution rather than comfort.
Good luck!
