I work in a busy emergency department in a hospital. In fact it's one of the busiest ERs in Europe. Because of the intensive nature of my job I have to game at work. That's gaming on nurses, physios and doctors. I've been doing this job for 6 months and I've developed a bit of knowhow. I've listed some tips beneath that will hopefully contribute to the wealth of knowledge here. I think these tips would be useful in any office or large shared workspace situation.
I know on seddit there's a lot of advice against gaming at work ; my opinion is if you are subtle and tactful then you can develop good opportunities for dating /relationships. You don't want to be mixing in ONS with work colleagues as a general rule.
1. Flow at work
Women at work have described me at work as 'in my element'. They can see that I'm revelling in the challenge. People can feel the vibe. Even the patients sense it. My theory is that I'm dropping in and out of flow state at work. Give this excellent recently posted article about flow a good read.
Before this job I used to get 'work dread', I'd wake up and shudder thinking about working - I wouldn't even think about game at work. I was focused, determined and even successful - but I was not in flow state.
I realise some jobs are a means to an end but I think finding a job where you can hit flow made a huge difference for me.
2.Acknowledgement through Kino
At work always introduce yourself with a firm handshake, a smile, solid eye contact and learn the other persons name.
After that, in a large open work space like an ER (maybe also a chef's kitchen, open office) , you might be whizzing past each other the whole day working. If l am onto her, be sure to acknowledge her each time we pass each other and we're busy.
Occasionally, it's verbal with a hey or her name. I make sure I'm heard with a bit of Kino too, or call them out again.
Sometimes I don't even bother saying anything - I just brush her arm , a soft palm on the upper back. One of my favourites is brushing the back of her hand with mine, the next time involving more fingers. This is more intimate but subtle.
If they catch your glance make sure you're smiling. If you weren't smiling before even better if think because the dynamic change into a smile evokes a bigger response. Acknowledgement is critical. Not acknowledging is de- escalating in my book. There is NO excuse if you're busy or they are - they must be reminded of you throughout the day.
3. Time off
If you have time to talk it's probably not going to be longer than two of three minutes . Its always good to utilise that to talk about time off. Most people hate work and would rather talk about time outside work.
You can talk about upcoming days off or holidays. As well building a feel good mood, you can also screen logistics for dates with these questions.
Time off also covers coffee and lunch breaks - screen when they're taking theirs/or state yours so you can sync breaks together. Try and isolate away from the main workspace. You'll get the opportunity to up the conversation and Kino a bit more.
4. IM groups
Setup a whatsapp group/ telegram group for all your workmates - for the sole purpose of after work socialising. Anyone new you meet, shortly after introducing ask for their number to add to the group. Add anyone and everyone at work from the cleaner upwards. Organise a meet every payday at least. This is an easy way to meet her out of work environment and it should be easy to find opportunities to isolate her. Encourage people to bring friends to help build social circle. If you invite others out they tend to invite you to their get together.
