Leaning in pretty much means that you are a lower status than her. You are placing too much value in what she has to say. Instead, if you can't hear her, just say "come in closer, I can't hear you". Not sure if there is any differences in EU or USA, but as an American, I like to use situational openers during the day(on the bus, dining hall, etc) and direct openers at night.

The idea, I think, is that leaning in a certain way appears submissive. But I have partial deafness in my left ear, so I always have to lean in to the right in order to even hear anything anyway. I've never found it to hurt my game any, since the rest of my body language is very dominant. I even use it to my advantage since leaning in closer makes it easier to establish physical contact.

Leaning in is a sign that you are making an effort to hear someone. This gives them the power in the interchange. I know this effect all too well, since I am partially deaf in one ear so I lean in quite a lot, I can't help myself.
